Burundian star, Sada Nahimana beats Brazilian counterpart to win ITF World Tour in Nigeria

 London, 15 October, 2019 (AltAfrica)-Sada Nahimana, has become the first African since Chanelle Scheepers in 2007 to win the women’s singles title at the Lagos Open, following a determined three-set game over 6th seed Laura Pigossi of Brazil.

Coming from her back-to-back defeats in the two-leg finals of the ITF World Tour, W15 in Nairobi, Kenya,  Africa’s No. 1 junior player was a surprised winner of the women’s singles of the first leg of 2019 Lagos Open Tennis.


BURUNDI’S SADA NAHIMANA CLAIMS LAGOS OPEN TITLEThe Lagos Open Tennis, an ITF World Tour, began its two weeks journey from 7 October, 2019 with Nahimana showing from the first match of the Main Draws that she meant business coming to Lagos, Nigeria for the first time to play in the World Tour.

The 18-year-old Nahimana survived stiff oppositions that brought her face to face with the Brazilian star, Laura Pigossi. Though the match was tough, it was Nahimana’s determination that saw her through the game after falling in the first set, but rose up against Pigossi in the last two set to win the match in 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 game to lift the women’s singles of the first leg of the ITF World Tour which is ongoing at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan on Monday

Burundi’s Star, Nahimana in action: She Steals Show At ITF World Tour In Lagos (Lagos Open)Nahimana is well travelled having played at the junior tournaments of major grand slams. She featured in the first round stage of the Australian Open Junior 2019, so also was French Open 2019Junior where she played in the second round.

In 2018, she reached in the second round of the Wimbledon Open Junior and first round of US Open Junior same year.

French star, Calvin Hemery won the men’s singles. In other matches, Laura Pigossi from Brazil paired India’s Rutuja Bhosale to beat the India-Egypt duo of Sandra Samir & Prarthana Thombare 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 in the women’s doubles.

The Men Doubles was won by the pair of Aziz Dougaz/Skander Mansouri who beat defeated the Lock brothers, Benjamin and Courtney in 7-6(4), 6-3 game.

Supported by Heineken and other sponsors, the Lagos Open Tennis 2019 is featuring players from 57 countries of the world and the tournament has been a competition being staged to celebrate the sitting Governor of Lagos since the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Lagos Open has its second week served off on from this week Monday, 14 October with the grand finale coming up on Sunday, 20 October when Governor Babajide Samwo-Olu will declare the tournament closed.
