Sudan’s military rulers, protesters hold fresh talks on Monday

London, May 13, 2019 (AltAfrica)-A spokesman for the umbrella for the protest movement in Sudan says the transitional military council and protesters are to hold fresh talks over handing power to a civilian administration on Monday.

Rashid al-Sayed of the Alliance for Freedom and Change told AFP that the meeting, originally planned for Sunday, was postponed to Monday.

The new president of Sudan’s military council Abdul Fattah Burhan) Al-Sayed did not give reasons why the talks were postponed. However, sources in the alliance said that more time was needed for consultations within the leadership.

On Saturday, the alliance said the TMC had invited it for a new round of talks after several days of a stalemate.

Sudan-protestThe United States has encouraged the TMC to reach an agreement with the protesters which reflects the will of the Sudanese people and allow peaceful protests and the freedom of expression.

Demonstrations in Sudan have continued after former president Omar al-Bashir was ousted on April 11 as protesters demand the military hands over power to a civilian-led authority.

The two sides are negotiating the formation of a new transitional government but are divided over the role of the military, which is dominated by al-Bashir appointees.

The TMC has resisted the pressure so far but has said it was ready to accept a civilian government of technocrats to run the country during an interim period of up to two years that would prepare for a presidential election. Agency
